Ricky Romain is not a refugee but much of his work engages with issues of migration and displacement and is informed by his own family's experience of exile. Precisely because Romain is not himself a refugee, his painting can been used to 'brand' the Refugee Artists' Homepage. It addresses issues of asylum and exile but cannot be interpreted as being prescriptive about what 'refugee art' is or should be.

Ricky Romain's own statement:
I have been painting for over twenty five years. My technique has evolved from standing in front of paintings and painters I admire and the constant process of challenging myself to find my own truth in each piece of work I embark upon. Painting has equipped me with a much richer and more sensuous vocabulary than my early attempts at poetry although it is the poetic approach to any form of creativity which continues to inspire me. Jewish roots and my playing of Indian classical music are fundamental influences.
